Free range kids: a Family photography workshop

Have you ever taken photographs of your children and felt that they were just lacking, somehow? Do you dislike those “say cheese” type shots but aren’t sure how to capture naturally beautiful, raw images? Or are you a professional or aspiring professional who feels they need some direction when it comes to photographing children? If the answer is yes, then I might just have the answer.

I am holding my first ever workshop on Saturday 30th March in the beautiful village of Tissington, set within Derbyshire’s Peak District National Park. We will begin our day at Herbert’s Tearooms in the village centre, for a brunch buffet of tea, coffee, cold drinks, cakes, pastries and fruit. We have very kindly been given exclusive use of a beautiful attic room for the day, with plenty of space to sit, eat and get to know each other before any formal teaching begins.

Every participant will receive a full colour magazine-style workbook, and we will be using these as a guide as we cover the basic principles of photography as well as more specialised hints and tips with children in mind. Everyone will complete a short questionnaire before the event to make sure that the correct topics are covered, so the day is worthwhile for all. After learning and discussing the theory, we will take a walk around the stunning village with a group of children to model for us. This is your opportunity to put what you’ve learned into practice. Thanks to the small size of the group, there will be plenty of time to have one-to-one tuition if you have any specific questions or problems. You are welcome to work as a group or wander off by yourself if you like - the day will be very relaxed so anything goes!

Tissington is a truly beautiful village, with photo opportunities everywhere you turn. Vintage-styled shops, picturesque gardens, the village duck pond and surrounding countryside will all be explored on our photo walk together.

It doesn’t matter whether you are a professional using a top of the range DSLR, or a parent wanting to capture precious moments as you chase after your children with an iPhone. Everyone will learn about the key elements of posing, techniques for getting natural shots and working with light to achieve dreamy, unforgettable images.

After the walk, we will return to Herbert’s to look at our images and enjoy lunch together. I will be conducting a ‘live edit’ where I am happy too work with any photographs you have taken, and also show you my own editing process to get the best out of your pictures. We will discuss mobile editing apps as well as tips and tricks to ‘rescue’ those photos that don’t always turn out the way we would like!

At the end of the day, we will say our goodbyes and everyone will leave with a goodie bag full of treats - some photography based, some showcasing the amazing produce of the local area. The day will be relaxed, fun and you will all go away with the ability of making the most of whichever camera you choose to use.

The cost for the full event including tuition, course resources, all food & drink and goodie bag is just £100.

The venue is beautiful but very small, so places are unfortunately limited. If you would like any more information or just want to chat, don’t hesitate to get in touch!

I look forward to seeing some of you on the day!
